Mkhondvo-Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Project
The upcoming Mkhondvo Ngwavuma project is designed to benefit 100, 000 emaSwati, covering a total area of 30,000 ha. In addition, about 10,000 job opportunities will be created and local people will be targeted to benefit. The project targets seven (7) chiefdoms in the Shiselweni Region.
The purpose of the Mkhndvo Ngwavuma Water Augmentation Project is to bring water to the Shiselweni Region through the construction of the Mpakeni Dam and water transfer from the Mkhondvo River.
This project is funded by AfDB.
Project Components
- A weir or dam on the Mkhondvo River at the Mahamba Gorge site;
- A canal/ pipeline transferring water from the Mahamba Gorge Weir to the headwaters of the Ngwavuma catchment;
- A dam on the Ngwavuma River at the Mpakeni Dam site, and
- A canal or pipeline transferring water from Mpakeni Dam to Sigwe, Mconcwane and St Philips irrigation areas.
- A canal or pipeline transferring water from Mpakei Dam to Greater Lavumisa
Objectives
The objectives of Mkhondvo Ngwavuma project are:
- To integrate smallholder farmers into the commercial economy through the establishment of farmer-managed irrigation companies.
- To strengthen bulk water administration and infrastructure maintenance
- To attain efficient project coordination and management
